First of all, we would like to thank every single one of you, readers, djs and producers out there for helping us fulfill the fantastic first seven months of our site. Our promised development has been getting a bit postponed but the launch is getting closer and closer, more information will be presented soon!
Anyhow, the year of 2010 has been extremely successful, not only for us but for the electronic dance music – especially House music – in general. Having reached a bigger crowd, creating a revolution among youngsters and pop-stars, the commerical genre has grown with a rapid pace from the usual pop and rnb-sound to a revolutionized electronic-produced one. Thanks to Swedish House Mafia, Avicii among others, electronic dance music is no longer an alternative genre, but a self-evident one. Starting off the year strongly, delivering a non-forgetable Summer filled with success and joy and rounding off with no exceptions, this year is sure to be the best year of House music so far setting sky-high expectations for the year of 2011. There has been many distinguished Dj’s and producers over the past year but our choices have fallen onto those who have accomplished something out of the ordinary, so be indulgent.
We’ve chosen to sum this year up by presenting six categories, chosing our winner of each one with a detailed and hopefully satisfying motivation as well as a mounted list of our absolute top tracks throughout the year, enjoy!
Track of the year
Motivation: Still riding on the remnants of the 2009’s super anthem Leave The World Behind, – which was crafted alongside Laidback Luke – the expectations were sky-high when the Swedish House Mafia entered the year of 2010. With nothing but brilliance on their minds, they were heading towards a successful year, not only as a group, but also as solo artists. When the first video recording of Axwell playing the track live hit YouTube, a light hesitation spread among us but when the record later on reached the hands of the people six months in, it havoced pole position since day One! We entered a new era, a unique sound was introduced by the superstar collective and it opened up for a completely new way of producing. Not only have they succeeded as a group, becoming the face of electronic dance music and being one of the main reasons the genre has grown to what it is today, the solo careers scampered away as far as it goes and their imprints have successfully dropped new instalments throughout the year. This tripod has been the main subject within electronic music over the past year and so it seems to continue. The choice was quite obvious; after having received the verdict of the people, success was no longer a question, it was a fact! The craft has been getting hammered by every major and minor Dj all around the globe since the day of the release and downfall has still not occurred to be an option for this mega banger.
We give you, the original track of the year, Swedish House Mafia – One!
Album of the year
Motivation: This glorified Finnish duo has branded themselves as one of a kind delivering a sweeping emotional sensibility of their mysterious presence throughout the past couple of months. Borrowing heavily from the eternal sounds of the 80’s, this duo has set traces in us all with its sound which can be classified as purity and simplicity. With the usage of disco synths and their own never-ending euphoria, they have come to create an unequaled debut album, becoming the icon of Anjunadeep and setting the nowadays prestigious imprint on the map. The noteworthy collection reflects upon a complete and cohesive journey of 13 journeys emerging a revered charachter within the electronic dance community. This is not your regular everyday club record but a substantial example of true innovativeness and evidence of how dead on target-melodies interact with each other in an extraordinary way.
The one we’ve chosen as the album of the year is Michael Cassette’s outstanding Temporarity!
Label of the year
Motivation: Flying on the wings of mafia member Steve Angello’s, this imprint has reached new heights and become one of the absolute top labels within House music today! Ushering into the year of 2010 by releasing his wingman brother AN21’s Gama – which was made alongside Max Vangeli – and when they later on added Afrojack’s trademark instalment Pacha On Acid to their remarkable discography, all eyes were pointed towards the imprint and camp Angello. Being run by the highly-respected Dj’s and producers, they branded themselves as a picky and reliable imprint as the year rushed by dropping much-anticipated tracks such as Knas, Tweet It, Where You Are and finalized the Fall by unleashing one of the most hyped tracks throughout the year, AGORa. Not only has the label been presenting some of the best releases in 2010, they’ve also become one of its very kind by encouraging promotion of the far away from recognizable producers such as Third Party and The Machine.
Our vote fall into favor of Size Records for keeping a qualitative level throughout the whole year!
Vocalist of the year
Motivation: Having introduced the year of 2009 with the stunning Life Goes On, it took her a total of a year and a half(!) before starting off the Summer of 2010 by firing away her next smasher on June 1st through the prestigious Subliminal, which became one of the most recognized statements throughout the year of 2010, live your life, be free! This time, the wait wasn’t as long since it only took her about two weeks until her next appearance gracing instalments on both Mutants and Neon with her incredible voice. Being signed to the respected Subliminal, the year wasn’t finished on her behalf getting featured on Jose Nunez beach banger Yesterday and rounding off with one of this years absolute largest productions presenting Size, Where You Are which became the New Yorker’s true breakthrough. Having some of the most recognized tracks in 2010 on the shelves, a title appropriate her magnitude is the Queen of House!
We have chosen the amazing Shawnee Taylor as the vocalist of 2010!
Breakthrough of the year
Motivation: Many eminent Dj’s and producers within House music were selecting him the breakthrough of 2010 as early as the end of 2009 whilst firing away his first major hit, a remix for none less than Tiesto. Starting off the new year with a bang, not only did he convert Junior Caldera’s Can’t Fight This Feeling into gold, he also layed his hands on Phonat’s Set Me Free blowing us all away and setting his career on fire for real! He continued to impress by stating his feelings for you together with Sebastien Drums in a new new new yellow world which continued developing into a universe of Bromance which became his true breakthrough. That did not hold the wonderchild back but continued growing, getting a groundbreaking contract with none less than EMI, joining in on their artist stab alongside Swedish House Mafia among others. He also received a golden award for the sales on his trademarker, Bromance in late Autumn and finished off the year nicely remixing one of the music industry’s absolute hottest names at this very moment, Robyn as well as gracing Nadia Ali’s Rapture with his everlasting brilliance. With a risen part as the main character of the simple piano smashers, this fellow has had an amazing journey throughout the whole year and has become the acknowledged icon of true success growing amazingly fast and being topical with a lot of new crafts which he presented over the past months as well!
We’re proud to present our fellow Swede, Avicii as our choice of the breakthrough artist of 2010!
Dj/producer likely to succeed in 2011
Motivation: This new name has been starting to pop up lately. With an amazing EP on the shelves of renowned Spinnin’ Records, being topical with a new one under his new alias and preparing for firing away a new instalment on the Ausse legend Dirty South’s imprint Phazing Records, this talent is surely one to keep an eye out for as a completely new year is on the horizon. His brilliance has been shown on several occasions throughout the past year, leaving traces of his remarkable growth and recruiting new fans all along the road. Not only did he start off this past year strongly, he managed to sustain an impressive level of quality and was recently picked up by one of the most respected fellows in the industry, Mr. Eric Prydz, who featured a brand new output of his in his recent Christmas show at Annexet in Stockholm.
The one we believe has what it takes to break through in 2011 is none other than the Stockholm-based talent, Jeremy Olander!
