DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll has become an influential ratification of the hottest DJ’s out over the past few years and is now announcing the results for the second year in a row with the poll being fully based on a public vote. In conjunction with Trackitdown, a widely known digital market for electronic dance music, an annual buzz as to whom is becoming the best new entry, taking the largest climb upwards and whom is elected the winner begins in post-summer to run through to the prestigious Amsterdam Dance Event – the week-long festival which is becoming more significant to the EDM industry by the day.

In terms of confusion concerning the results; many have come to judge and rate the world’s DJ’s along with their placings on the poll which, in truth, has come to be based principally on the CD-spinner’s performances on the charts and as producers instead of what it ultimately was intended to rate – mixing and general DJ skills. Although skillful discjockey’s like James Zabiela may not place themselves and their outstanding knowledge on everything mixing and transitions at the forefront, one should keep in mind the top 100 results are only approximations as to who are the most renowned names in modern-day clubland, despite the fact that an appearance on the poll is indeed a prestigious award to any DJ and/or producer.

In an epoch where DJ’s are like the modern-day rockstars and attract thousands and thousands of raving club-goers to, if not such festivals as Ultra in Miami, Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy, Electric Zoo and Sensation, weekly events in nearby clubs and venues across the globe, this poll is now a solid and utmostly intriguing statement as to whom has had a successful year and who has not. Be sure to scim through the listed results after the break and compare them to the results of 2010.

Congratulations to David Guetta for taking over pole position after a 4 year supremacy of Armin van Buuren, to Avicii, Afrojack and Swedish House Mafia for fighting themselves into the top 10, to Skrillex for the best new entry, to Calvin Harris for the biggest climb and a big congratulations to talents like Hardwell, Alesso, AN21 and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike for finally breaking themselves into the DJ Mag top 100 poll.

  • CROFAN : funny thing you say you dont like commercial music but youre happy for Avicii ? i dont see any difference between Avicii and SHM except that SHM is way better than Avicii at live

the EDM has became sooo mainstream since the begin of 2010. i’m not saying house music is dead but when i see this poll… Avicii Afrojack SHM have now turned into the commercial side of music. sad for guys like Jeremy Olander Arno Cost Guy j who keep producing good music…
and Axwell… by biggest disappointement this year.. where the fuck is the old Axwell
the good music that i used to love 2-3-4-5 years ago is almost dead..

  • Mick: You get me all wrong, I don’t like Avicii or SHM – at least not any more. Trust me when I say I was fan back in the days of their early work. But that was before both of the started a mass production sell out process. After ”Save the world tonight” I puke just hearing about SHM.

My point was very pure and simple, SHM failed big time this year. They maybe have sick live shows, but they failed taken into consideration their extremely commercialisation during 2010/11. They have lost a lot of votes no matter how you look at it. When they are beaten by Avicii and you start counting the fans on FB….

    - Avicii 500 000.
    - SHM 2 million,
    - SHM individuals in total 1 million +.

Anyway, EDM scene are more or less divided. There are great, non commercial house music out there – you just have to dig deeper. The big stars see the opportunity to make top dollars. You just have to find new inspiration and new idols you appreciate.

  • Dada Life should be #1 in my opinion!

  • SHM encouraged people to vote for them as individual DJs and not SHM as a team, and I guess at least some people actually listened to them.. :P Taking that into consideration, I don’t think 10th place is a fail at all..

It’s obvious though that people vote for the best producer with the most mainstream success etc, and not the best DJ. Especially since the voting moved to Facebook I think and DJs tried to gain votes among their Facebook fans (and if you look at who has the most facebook fans, it’s not surprising who won the vote)..

I think the poll has become more and more mainstream the last couple of years. I guess most people voted for Armin because of his success as a producer too, but at least he’s been doing amazing work as a DJ too, with gigs all the time where the crowd go wild (to say the least), his huge weekly radio show and several outstanding ”a state of trance” events.

I really can’t say the same about Guetta, he’s a great producer indeed but as a DJ, he fails to impress (even though he always claims that he’s a DJ more than a producer).. Still, it obviously makes sense that a house DJ is #1 these days, but I would have preferred if it was because of impressive DJ-skills and gigs, and not because of mainstream chart success.
