Russia may have an Electronic music scene well worth shouting about, but that hasn’t stopped them lusting over Europe’s refined House stronghold. So when one third of Sweden’s most esteemed Dance export to date agreed to kick-start the latest exciting instalment in Russian broadcasting, hysteria erupted. But with hometown talent and celebrated figures alike gathered, there is little chance of Izvestiya Hall having a quiet night.
High-flying House duo Matisse & Sadko have proven that amid the hysteria surrounding Europe and its Electronic Music assets, they share more than just a surname. As the boisterous brothers turned Russian floor representatives have extended their cunning studio intellect across the globe, their wide appraisal has seen the enterprising collective touch base with the masses at Sensation White and with a collaborative number alongside hometown peers Swanky Tunes for Refune Records just out, their eyes seem solidly set on global domination. As ‘The Legend’ continues to tear apart the digital market, Matisse & Sadko are sure to be looking to turn eyes on their home turf alongside the alternative Mafia man and his adoring fans at Izvestiya Hall.
Outside of the undisputed, Axel Hedfors has remained the more private member of his heavyweight Swedish House collective. With a legacy that shaped the standard of contemporary House music to an all-time-high and the gravitating force of his Axtone imprint behind him, there is little evidence to suggest that Axwell could be one of Sweden’s most highly renowned artists to date. Since bagging the Swedish Government Music Export Prize for 2011 for his work alongside Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso as Swedish House Mafia, Axwell will be looking to extend the country’s firm grasp on eclectic House music with a signature high-octane outing of undeniably potent Progressive House.

As his newly previewed remix for Kelly Clarkson is just around the corner from seeing its release on Monday, Nicky Romero comes out with a high-quality audio recording for the first hour of his dance-friendly live set at Club Glow in Washington D.C on December 30th 2011. Besides featuring future classics such as his sought-after collaboration with Avicii, falsely rumoured to be titled Fuck School, and David Guetta and his’ upcoming remix of Wild Ones, this dynamic, live mixed, hour-long Nicky Romero fortifies the heavy-hitting Netherlands export’s penchant for thick and well-crafted bass drops in conjunction with a string of sun-kissed, synth-driven offerings as well.

While some were spending their last moments of 2011 alongside beloved family members, a mass of 10,000 House music heads were ringing in the new year as attendants of the New Year’s Eve extravaganza at Pier 94 in New York City. With a line-up that comprises the likes of Glenn Morrison, Cazzette, Arty, Swanky Tunes and last but surely not least, the headlining Avicii, last night’s major event on the east coast of the US was something out of the ordinary. And as a treat to those not getting ahold of a ticket to the event due to its rapid sell-out or those residing outside the US, the complete New York show was live broadcasted through Sirius XM.
Containing unreleased material such as Qulinez’ Troll, Cazzette’s Killmode, Arty and Matisse & Sadko’s Trio and countless Avicii ID’s amongst others, these four, high-quality live sets are certain to kick 2012 off with a bang.

Following a year of iconic success for the Swedish superstar who’s been seen establishing himself as a prominent label head of his own Axtone Records and an essential third of the successful trio Swedish House Mafia, Axwell has further thrived from the positive vibes surrounding his reputation of being a favourite amongst House music fans across the globe. Coming out with the acclaimed and eagerly-awaited Heart Is King in April, two well-received remixes of Blow Up and One Look as well as Save The World and Antidote under his, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso’s still rapidly ascending Swedish House Mafia moniker, Axwell has fortified himself as one of the key players in 2011.
With another successful year closing in, Ax rounds this year off with a high-quality video and audio live stream from the DJ-favourited Sunburn Festival in Goa, India.

If the Scandinavian’s choice to celebrate Christmas a day earlier than the rest of the world had never held much in the way of benefits before 2011, then this year truly rewrote the rulebooks. Boasting an already comfortable year for the reputation and influx of fine Swedish House music, a stellar cast of its home grown talent descended on Gothenburg to not only nod to one of the globes most outdated traditions to date, but tip their hats to a year that truly put the country’s thriving musical legacy back on the map.
Reaping in the essential support of Tiësto and his rising hometown peer Hardwell for latest banger ‘Crunch’, fresh-faced Gothenburgian homeboy Franz Novotny took on the task of opening the night’s festive outing of Swedish talent following a promising year for the relatively unknown newcomer. Despite being severely delayed, Novotny’s second live outing highlighted the true potential of the 18-year-old, dealing the early crowds an energetic outing of unreserved House music despite the unfortunate hiccup.
Linus Eklöw, the man behind the rising European House moniker Style Of Eye, was sure to be in true festive spirit the subsequent year of positively frenzied antics. As a self professed radical against all imaginable genre constraints and guidelines, the Stockholm based producer has gradually deviated from outright Techno to multifaceted dance floor dissipation, attracting the likes of Claude Von Stroke’s Dirty Bird and German imprint Pickadoll along the way to establish himself as something of a leader of Sweden’s new school House movement. In an energetic display of popular dance floor fillers, Eklow’s technical approach to his live set added a dimension of appeal to his already sterling reputation for live House music, using current favourites from Dada Life, Avicii and Swedish House Mafia to keep the crowds large and loud throughout his triumphant return to Sweden.
Making an unforgettable mark on James Blunt’s ‘Dangerous’ back in August alongside Deniz Koyu, Johan Wedel’s fearless approach to owing offerings has sealed him an unwritten seal as one of Sweden’s youngest budding heroes amid the scenes uncharted territories. Boasting a sharp hand for intense outings of unassuming Progressive House cuts, last night’s highly anticipated Christmas showdown marked an incredibly suitable arena for the 21year-old beat smith to strut his stuff after a long withstanding residency in Cannes. Donning an incredibly loud jacket to the night’s festive proceedings, Wedel’s enthusiastic sing-alongs and diverse range of material seemed to hit all the right notes for those in attendance at this long awaited hometown return for the promising Swede hopeful. Despite his set suffering the wrath of earlier delays, Wedel dealt a direct and energetic blow of an own re-edit alongside a host of well-received leaps from emotive builds and powerful drops, proving exactly why he deserves the attention mustered throughout 2011.
Warily balancing the realms of mainstream club mongering and earnest dissident dance floor contributions whilst keeping a weary distance from the global press, the public eye has seldom been stolen from the iconic Swede powerhouse behind some of global Dance music’s most beloved offerings. Rumoured to be an original affiliate of the country’s illustrious House mafiosa, Eric Prydz has kept his discography ticking with a hit-after-hit under the well-endowed stronghold of his musical empire, consisting of monikers Pryda and Cirez D aswell as imprints Pryda and Mouseville. Of all the Swedish stars that could have come for Christmas, there was never a doubt that the return of Sweden’s modestly spoken House appendage. In an outing of well-received original cuts from his own well-stocked discography, there were few unmoved by the original Swedish master at last night’s proceedings. Still flawless in his transitions and greeted with a wave of fist pumping homeland followers, there was little indication of Prydz’s dynamic live appeal going anywhere fast in the nights festive proceedings. Drawing on favoured classics from Daft Punk an Faithless in the process, some special cuts from the night suggest that as one hell of a year for the globally acclaimed producer ends, the one approaching promises to be nothing short of magic for this well preserved legend of European Dance music.
As another of Sweden’s young leaders that once basked in the country’s misconstrued Techno scene, Henrik B is a different breed in European Dance music’s à la mode forces. Strongly tipped by Axwell and boasting support from the likes of Tiësto and Mr. Prydz himself, his well-pitched offensive of the globes supreme outlets of Electronic music has gained him a reputation as one of Swedish Dance music’s most hotly tipped producers to date. Unhindered by the slightly thinning crowds, it was the crowds glowing reactions to renowned singalong moments of ‘Levels’ and Adrian Lux’s ‘Teenage Crime’ that truly hit home the sheer dynamics of Henrik Berntsson’s mass appeal on the global clubbing circuit. Finishing proceedings with an actively charged outing of modern bangers, Berntsson preserved the crowds into the earlier hours of the morning with little effort and a whole surge of enthusiasm. Singing off an incredibly positive night of home grown Electronic music, this highly enthusiastic final set could not have better encapsulated the warm glow of pride and excitement that surrounds Swedish House music as its players prepare to bring even more positive noise for 2012.

There is no denying that where Electronic Dance Music is concerned, Sweden has taken the torch for 2011. In the first event of it’s kind at the Erricson Globe arena in Stockholm, the industry’s most prominent young players gathered alongside a somewhat dignified member of its musical elite and 300,000 watts of speaker output to make loud and proud noise for a movement in music that has excelled all expectations despite the crushing economic vices that have surrounded Europe.
Ditching the nervous start rather promptly, Bromma based newcomer Leo Netz inherited the gruelling task of kicking off last night’s rather boisterous proceedings. In honour of his inclusion in the early parts of the live spectacle, Netz dealed in Deep House grooves and its calmer qualities to greet the arrival of the night’s early risers. Paying little attention to the trickling crowds, we can only wonder if a later set would do the young gun further justice, but as far as opening acts go Stockholm could have done far worse than this promising young Swede.
As far as hotly tipped Dutch House artists are concerned, Nicky Romero has mounted an intense shift in popularity for 2011. As he prepares to follow David Guetta on his sold-out UK tour alongside Nero in 2012, the event was good grounds to judge whether the rising Dutch producer could handle the big league with same vigour that he has brought to the underground scene over the past couple of years. In a vivid set dominated by his own well-received productions, Romero’s intense transits gave the gathering crowds their first lethal injection of feel-good floor play for the night. Evidently making the right moves in a mash-up of well-endowed favourites from across the spectrum and a sneaky drop of forthcoming banger ‘Toulouse’, Romero’s display of essential fist pumping moments were essentially collected by the crowds reaction to Avicii collaboration ‘ID’, suggesting much louder ground for 2012 from a Dutch contender who has truly earned the attention.
Hometown hero Alesso has many reasons to be celebrating as the year draws to an inevitable close. Fresh off the mark from his busiest summer to date, which saw bless some of the globes biggest festivals alongside the likes of Swedish House Mafia, what better way to emphasise the young Swedes timely rise to the big league than a sold-out appearance at one of the Sweden’s biggest arenas. But despite asking the crammed entourage of adoring hometown enthusiasts if they are read, no one could have been prepared for the dynamic live equation conjured by Sweden’s House-orientated boy wonder. With an array of mobile phones hitting the backdrop of the globe arena with the same velocity as that coming from the stage from start-to-finish, Alesso’s returning escapade hit all the right notes for his Swedish peers. Racing through such bangers as ‘Calling’, ‘Raise Your Head’ and his beloved remode of David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’, it was a heartfelt nod of thanks to his Swedish fan base that saw him drop the ultimate talking point of 2011 studio output – his well-received remix of Nadia Ali and Starkiller’s ‘Pressure’. With the world well and truly tuned in to the hard-hitting House helmsman, Alesso brought home the celebrations with outright style and a genuine sense of appreciation for the people that put him there.
Boasting 10,000 crowds at his seasonal Monday night spectacle at Privilege Ibiza, Tiësto has proven that there is simply no show too big for his maximal approach to Electronic music. Donning his globally appraised turntable intellect to the premiere of the latest Mission Impossible film in Brazil just days before Saturday’s sold-out event, the grandeur surrounding the original Dutch superstar’s presence across the globe has shown no signs of simmering down under the hands of time and relentless shifts in trend. Displaying an array of stunning lights, blaring visual components and maximal laser therapy, Tiësto showed the crowd just how much character the don of Dutch Dance music still brings to any proceedings, dipping in and out of every sub-genre imaginable in a well collected retrospect of the year in bonafide club anthems. Taking the time to appraise Avicii’s phenomenal anthem ‘Levels’ before dropping Nause’s Made Of and his own remix of Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’, not a single foot was left rooted amid the definitive peak of Tiësto’s well-executed musical manoeuvres. Throwing the crowd down memory lane with a brief diversion into the realms of what made him with a surprise appearance from some early anthems of his heyday, even those left sulking about his more recent digression into House music could not help but get caught up in the retrospect of his undeniable contributions to Trance music. Ending on ‘Zero 76’ and ‘Maximal Crazy’, Sweden is given a well-rounded display of just why this man has endured global Dance music with the utmost ease, signalling that with the approach of 2012 there will be many more firsts for this avid Dutch icon to tick off.
Further to speculation that the talent surrounding modern Dance music gets younger every year, notorious Dutch House spectacle Hardwell ended proceedings with the boyish grandeur you would expect from one of the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll’s youngest additions to date. After a year of well-received releases, exciting bootlegs and a tour-schedule that would cripple even the strongest newcomer, it is safe to say that the punch behind Robbert van de Corput’s premature legacy is no short-lived fad. Despite the thinning crowds that tend to follow such a large set from Tiësto, the final chapter in a somewhat Dutch invasion of Sweden just kept getting stronger. Dealing in mighty blows of the dynamic turntable dexterity that have hailed him as a strong contender for the big league, his shoddy set time was not enough to defer from the energy of his intensely popular ‘Levels’ bootleg and forthcoming single ‘Spaceman’. With a direct injection of enthusiasm from the very vocal Dutch youngster, Hardwell gave the final leg of proceedings the energy of a headline set, boasting a furiously triumphant finish to undoubtedly one of the finest talking points for live Dance music in Sweden for 2011.

Sold out in less than ten minutes, the Swedish House Mafia show at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York, USA is one for the books and an event certain to break new ground for electronic dance music. After a persistent rise since Steve Angello, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso initially teamed up as Swedish House Mafia for the release of One in early 2010, they have seen the full-blown reformation in terms of House music becoming a permanent force in clubbing and on radio stations across the globe. But in truth, there was not that much of an outlook as it was playing essential roles as the pioneers for the Swede’s who today stand firmly rated as three of the most intriguing acts in electronic dance music with self-evident headliner positions on any top-tier dance event, both as a trio and as acclaimed solo artists. With the new, fourth single, titled Antidote, out and also starring the Pendulum side project Knife Party, made up by Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, the Swedish super group is undoubtedly a dominant force in clubland and one worthy of making the very first, ground-breaking DJ appearance at the spacious and nostalgic venue that is Madison Square Garden.

Along with the unstoppable progress of modern technology these days, Max Vangeli joined ResLive to make his second live streamed virtual DJ performance last Wednesday, also bringing aboard Third Party among others. With the imminent release of his and AN21’s debut album on Size Records, comprising tracks such as Whisper and People Of The Night to name a couple, as a result to years of what they like to call a solid copartnership, the San Francisco residing DJ and producer has undoubtedly been a hot topic in clubland lately. And now – a week after the broadcast of his second show at ResLive.com, the phenomena allowing pretty much every person with an internet connection to watch a cartooned 3d figure spin the records of the Dj’s choice – the two hour marathon that covers everything from the funkiest of Riva Starr to dubstep from Skrillex is out in high quality.
Available is also an hour-long set from Third Party, the London duo signed to Steve Angello’s Size Records. With the ground-breaking Levels now officially out, Avicii is arguably the largest deal in clubland at the moment. On top of selling out spacious clubs and stadiums like no other, the 22 year old hit-smith that is Sweden’s Tim Bergling has shown indications of being in possession of that desirable touch of Midas, the Greek legend king whose unique ability was to turn everything he touched into gold. Indeed, there has been quite a few golden gems emerging from Avicii headquarters and At Night management this year, including Fade Into Darkness and Sunshine and literally a horde of ID’s. And with Dancing In My Head, with singer Eric Turner, and Before This Night Is Through (Bad Things), under his Tim Berg moniker, coming up, the hereunto unstoppable rise of Avicii is certainly not looking to simmer down anytime soon.
Nevertheless, the young Swedish prodigy hit the decks at Super Glow, DC Armory in Washington, United States last Friday for a three hour marathon, during which the over 10 000 strong crowd raved to a few more than one unreleased Avicii, a bunch of old ones and new tracks like Alesso’s Raise Your Head, Michael Calfan’s Resurrection and the Alesso remix to Titanium. The live set, tipped by a blinding, new opening track from the Swede, ventured cyberspace recently as a result to getting a spin on Sirius XM yesterday and has been the talk of the town ever since. Frankly, there are quite a few more than one town involved in this matter as a sample of what many deem the ”next” Levels is well on its way of going viral across the globe.
